Static vs. Dynamic QR Codes: What's the Difference?
Understand the key differences between static and dynamic QR codes — when to use each, and why dynamic codes are better for print campaigns.
The Core Difference
A static QR code encodes your destination URL directly into the pattern. The data is fixed — if the URL changes, the code is useless and must be reprinted. A dynamic QR code encodes a permanent short link that redirects to wherever you want. Change the destination any time — the printed code still works.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | Static | Dynamic |
|---|---|---|
| Destination editable after print | ✗ No | ✓ Yes |
| Scan analytics | ✗ None | ✓ Country, device, browser, time |
| Works forever | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes (as long as service is active) |
| Cost | Free | Pro plan |
| Best for | One-off projects, personal use | Print campaigns, marketing, business |
When to Use Static QR Codes
- The URL will never change (e.g., your Wi-Fi password, a static PDF)
- One-time personal use — flyers for a single event
- You don't need scan data
When to Use Dynamic QR Codes
- The destination might change (new product page, updated menu, seasonal campaign)
- You're printing in bulk and fixing mistakes would be costly
- You need to measure ROI — how many scans, from which countries, on which devices
- You want A/B test different landing pages using the same printed code
How to Get Dynamic QR Codes
Dynamic QR codes are available on the Pro plan. After upgrading, create codes in the QR Code Generator and they'll automatically use a dynamic redirect. Learn how to upgrade →
